Camel saddle stools, or ottomans, originated from nomadic cultures in North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, evolving from functional riding gear developed around the 1st millennium BCE to popular 20th-century decorative furniture.
While authentic saddles were designed for desert travel with wood and leather, the “stool” variant became a popular tourist and export item in the 1950s–70s, particularly from Egypt.
